LLC
Would it be a good idea to have the name of your LLC as a common name, such as Bob Smith LLC, creating more "disinformation" or do you think it would lead to problems when using it for registration or property transfers.

... I prefer--and use--only generic names starting with words such as Somerset, Emerald or Seabrook.

However, if you are doing business under a pen name, using an LLC with that same name may be an advantage in certain cases.

Anonymous email?
Does anyone know anything about this company? (See URL, below). They used to be based in Japan, then closed down for a while, and said they opened back up in Indonesia (IIRC). Now they're saying they're in Switzerland.

What ever happened to Jim's part 4 of Adventures in Nomineeland?

... If I remember correctly, Jim got sidetracked with some urgent problems that had to be attended to. I hope his adventures will be continued in the future.

Florida business checking
I talked to Suntrust bank and they stated my llc would have to be registered in FL to open up a business checking account. i am expeceting a sizable check that is being made out to my wyoming llc.

... If the check is for real estate, insist that it be made out to you personally. (That's what I do, and I don't take no for an answer.)

Re: SecureVoice
This is in regard to securevoice. According to this quote from their site they keep records of all customers, their calls, people they call, so I am not so sure if it would be the best choice-in my opinion. Using throw away phones and pagers is the still the best way to avoid any records being kept. 'Because the system identifies the specific offender on every call, from every inmate phone, investigators can trace any call to a specific inmate.'

RE:: #5804, Firefox tips
I see no problem with using this feature in the Firefox 3 that came with the current upgrade to my IronKey secure USB flash drive -- especially since I have the NoScript add-on installed, and since I only run the IronKey in read-write mode on computers that I trust (my own laptop). (I can use the IronKey on computers that I do NOT trust using its read-only mode and "Secure Sessions" feature.)

I choose to trust the IronKey team; I do not believe that they would have released the latest IronKey software upgrade without thorough testing to be sure that the Firefox 3 version (which is locally installed on the IronKey secure USB stick and can only run once you have entered your IronKey password to access that stick) does NOT compromise my security. I am confident that the local IronKey-resident Firefox keeps its bookmarks, browsing history, et cetera, locally on the IronKey and does NOT communicate them over the Internet to any other computers.

Secure Voice
Ed, search Google using the term: secure voice. It would require more than just installing software on your cell phone. It requires software and hardware on both ends of the conversation.

Firefox tips
From the Firefox Version 3 features page (h__p;//en-us.www,mozilla,com/en-US/firefox/features/#location-bar

Smart Location Bar

"A quick way to get to the sites you love—even the ones with addresses you only vaguely remember. The new Firefox 3 location bar learns as you use it—it’s so highly evolved that we like to call it the “Awesome Bar”. Over time, it adapts to your preferences and offers better fitting matches. Type in a term and the autocomplete function includes possible matching sites from your browsing history, as well as sites you’ve bookmarked and tagged in a drop down. For example, you could enter the tag: “investments” to find “www, fool, com”. Matched terms are highlighted, making the list of results easy to scan. "

Sounds cool huh? What they are not telling you is that the "Awesome Bar" uses your bookmarks and not your browsing history as part of its drop down menu. They are also not telling you that the "Awesome Bar" ranks the bookmarks you visit in order by how frequently you visit them!

(h__p;\\support,mozilla,com/en-US/kb/Cannot+clear+Location+bar+history)

Go to the link below to install an addon which will allow you to clear the location bar (Just add the t's in the h__p, swap the semicolon for a colon and the comma for a period in the web addresses above to go to those sites)

Consulting question
dear sir -- my girlfriend says her dad got an e-mail from you last friday and that it mentioned a discounted fee for consultations in las vegas. i can't afford to fly there but do you ever travel up this way? i have a great business idea and my girlfriend loves it but we need some advice about how to help us maintain a low profile. do you have any discount for young people just starting out, with limited funds?

... Although my fees are normally fixed, please note that on the way to Vegas, I will be stuck with a day to kill in Missoula, Montana. (An 8-hour drive from Calgary.)

If you can meet me there on May 21st, contact me by e-mail [jjl (at) canaryislandspress.com]. We'll work something out to fit your budget.

Bugged cell phones?
I read JJL's monthly newsletter about bugged cell phones; amazing.

According to the Washington Times B. Hussain Obama will have a Blackberry that uses a product from Genesis Key called 'SecureVoice' to keep his conversations safe.

Anyone have some opinion about this product to keep our cell phones secure? If its good enough for B.O., good enough for me? Note: I don't work for these guys and have nothing to gain but privacy by bringing it up.

OPT-OUT, US Search
I know JJL's opinion on 'opting out' of People Search websites is to leave it alone and move on invisibly, nevertheless I wrote to USSearch (the group that is associated with WhitePages.com) asking to be removed from their system. I did not have to provide them with any additional information that was not already on their website; basically if I showed up on their page as living in that town then I listed it as a former address. For some I could not recall the address I used to have and just indicated the town that I wanted removed. Sure enough they did. It took about a month for my name to be removd, and I might land up back on there eventually, but I consider this a modicum of success that didn't require handing over ANY info that they didn't already have on me (just name and town). Go to this page, item #4, write a basic letter. Good luck.

#5793 - UPS Store
You might try having something sent in a generic-sounding business name, like Smith & Sons Enterprises or something. I believe JJ mentioned this in HTBI. Call the store and tell them one of your staff is in town on business and needs this package, and anyone who asks for it in the company's name can pick it up. If it were me, I'd go the extra mile and print a business card and company ID on my computer with a made-up logo in case the clerk asks for some kind of validation.

... The exact method is outlined on page 51 of How to Be Invisible.

Re: Hawaii Declaration Forms
I recall the same thing when I went to Maui for vacation with my brother. What usually end up doing is putting down my nickname (which is very very different from my real name), an anonymous Internet voicemail number and the lobby address to the hotel or resort I'll be leaving or staying at. That way, if they need to, they can contact me, while at the same time I maintain my privacy. No one has ever questioned me on this. All they pretty much do is check to see that you filled everything out. Oh, and if you're in Hawaii, one secret is that it's both much cheaper and more private to stay in a hostel. Unlike hotels, they never have problems accepting cash as a form of payment for your stay. Several hotels that we've been to required an id and credit card as payment if we intended to stay more than 5 days, even if we already had all the cash at hand that we needed.

Hawaii Agriculture declaration form
I just arrived in Kailua-Kona (on the leeward coast of the Big Island) on a domestic flight from San Francisco.

The flight attendants passed out a "State of Hawai'i Department of Agriculture Plants and Animals Declarion Form." Actually, this was two forms in one: the front of the form was for the Dept. of Agriculture, and the reverse was for the "Department of Business, Economic Development & Tourism."

On the front of the form, it reads, "MANDATORY DECLARATION for all passengers, officers, and crew members" and cites a state law (Chapter 150A, Hawaii Revised Statutes), warning that "YOU ARE REQUIRED BY STATE LAW TO FILL OUT THIS AGRICULTURAL DECLATION FORM." Quoting from that statute, the form states that it is a misdemenour offense to:(a) deface this declaration form, (b) give false information, (c) fail to declare restricted items on the form. It's also a felony to intentionally smuggle a snake or other prohibited or restricted article.

So far, so good. I filled out the parts of the form that asked about those items (I ticked the box to say that I had "none of the above:, and signed and dated the form.

However, the front of the form also asked for (a) my full name, (b) home address (city, state, zip code), (c) my address in Hawai'i (Hawai'i address or hotel name), which Hawaiian island, (d)phone number, (e) the number of persons in the party, (f) the name of the airline, (g) the flight number, and (h) the date of arrival. I noticed that none of these questions were supported by the quoted language in the statute.

So I left those items blank, just to see what would happen. I reasoned that I had not defaced the form, provided false information, etc., and that those particular questions were an invasion of my privacy.

The flight attendants objected: they were instructed to make sure that everyone answered those questions. So when we deplaned, they asked for the state employee who collects these declarations to wait just outside the cabin door, so that I could deal directly with him.

That person took the form, saw that I had ticked "none of the above" and signed and dated it, and accepted it as is -- without answers to those intrusive questions. No problem!

I did not, of course, fill out the tourism questionnaire on the back of the form, as no one claimed that filling out that part of the form was mandatory.

Has anyone else refused to fill out such intrusive questions on an agricultural declaration form? What were the results?

(I recall crossing by car into California and Arizona, but do not recall anyone asking for my home address, telephone number, address while in the state -- just questions about agricultural imports.)

Ghostery
Here's a Firefox add on that lets you know what sites, if any, are watching you. I installed it and got to [no?] results so I guess I'm not very interesting - which is fine.

All of this remdinds me of the old "Spy vs. Spy" feature of Mad Magazine. It could almost be funny.

post 5747 - UPS store
I read Will's post (5747). Does anyone know if UPS store allows people to receive packages not in their name? Assuming UPS needs to see ID, will they let you walk off with a package addressed to another name than what's on your ID? Like if I go in to UPS and say I want to arrange for delivery of a package to so and so name and I'll be the one picking it up when UPS calls to say its arrived.

Track Me Not
In response to post 5786. @Joe : I am using Firefox and TMN icon is located at the bottom bar. Right mouse click-select options. Click 'current queries' and a window will open. This window will have the path to the file which you can edit. GO search for that file, open it and edit. For example, mine is something file:///C:/Documents and Settings/Admin/Application Data/Mozilla/Firefox/Profiles/XXXXX.default/TrackMeNot/tmn_seeds.txt Hope this helps.
