Lost/Stolen Drivers License
My wallet was lost/stolen, which included my driver's license (which, thanks to HTBI, lists my GHOST address, hallelujah!)

Is there any other precaution I need to be aware of, in case anyone found my ID and is trying to use it?

Thanks for all your help!

Best, Dani

Trackable Clothing
"The clothing will be designed to allow the wearer to be located almost anywhere in the world and from any internet connection."

... Hmmm ... a gift of clothing to send to your daughter in college, so you know where she goes on spring break?

... I suspect that a few readers may think of other ways to use this.

Blippy/Google revealed bank info
It was a matter of time. Google Cache revealed the information.

Simply by typing a phrase into Google and specifying the results come from Blippy, page after page of results like DEBIT CARD PURCHASE AT DOMINO'S PIZZA #01, [redacted] MI ON 122109 FROM CARD#: 54243[redacted] appears.

Passport cards
In HTBI you say that we should use our passport for id and leave the license in the car. They are now coming out with a passport card that is the size of a license and is much easier to carry around than the passport. would you recommend using this as id now in place of the passport book?

... No, because there is no reason to carry such a card around all the time. What if you lost your billfold or were robbed? I seldom have any need to show ID so most of the time my passport remains at home, hidden of course, and gathering dust.

In addition, my passport was issued before the chips were used.

Checks written in my name
I often receive checks written out to my name. I would like to deposit the checks into a checking account. What is the best way to do this without opening a checking account that is associated with my SSN?

... Unless you can find a nominee who has your same name, not possible.

Free tv antenna
Why buy a tv antenna when you can make your own? The link below shows you how. The Gray-Hoverman is supposed to be the best homemade antenna for receiving over the air digital television. I built one and receive 30+ digital channels.

CA Drivers License
I noticed this statement when you go to renew your CA driver’s license. You agree that you will accept service at the address that your provide. Stating” I am the person whose name appears in Part 2 above. This mailing address shown is valid, existing and accurate. I consent to receive service of process at this mailing address pursuant to 415.20(b), 415.30(a) and 416.90 of the Civil Procedure Code.” I have researched a few other states and I can’t seem to find another state that makes this a requirement to get a driver’s license.

Over the air HDTV
I am not sure if this subject has been discussed. If you want to avoid dealing with a cable or satellite provider in order to keep your privacy but if you still like to watch TV sometimes, I recommend getting a HDTV with a digital tuner built in. All you need then is an antenna which you can buy at Amazon. It is a great way to watch free HDTV and to keep your privacy. I do not watch much TV but I like to watch the news and some shows on the major networks.

... Good point, Andrew. It has never been discussed before.

"Steve's post" is all over the internet. Here is a rebuttal by a writer at the DailyPaul website: And by the way, there is no law, quite the contrary, that stipulates a right of termination of a SSN. "I went the whole SSN cancellation route, including all the registered letters and quoting the federal statutes that you show. Bottom line.

I received a letter from SSA stating that I cannot cancel my SSN because that number does not belong to me, it was created and is owned by the SSA. It was created and was assigned exclusively for my use upon approval of my application. It was MY number for use in commerce. They simply returned my SS card and politely stated that if I had problems with the SSN all I had to do is to stop using it. They also said that the number would stay assigned to me for the duration of my life, should I wish to change my mind and use it.

However, I did manage to open a bank account without supplying a SSN. But, my account was always being flagged and reported to the IRS. Months later, I was examining details of my account and lo and behold, I saw my SSN pop up (they don't need you to tell them what it is). At the end of about two years, the bank (B of A) froze my account at the request of the IRS. Two days after that, over $7,000.00 was removed from my account and sent to the IRS with no explanation. I got a letter from the IRS that they wanted to talk to me. I went and they accused me of money laundering and said that I needed to document all sources of my income over the past five years or I wouldn't get my $7,000.00 back. I was doing business on the internet without a SSN and couldn't document anything as I didn't keep records. So, guess what? Bye, bye $7K

Yeah, go ahead and play the SSN games. It will get you nowhere fast except to be entered into their database as a troublemaker or worse. If you are going to get out of the system, you'll have to get TOTALLY out by going to another planet, living in a cave or by killing yourself. Otherwise, it will be an impossible task that will only frustrate and drive you insane. Good luck to all that try this.

... Thanks Brad. Right on!

Open U.S. Bank Account w/o SSN
J, I received this via reliable channels, but have not vetted it yet. Perhaps your readers can use this: I recently tried to open a bank account with my local bank , and when they asked for a SSN, I informed them that I didn't have one. They flatly refused and said that without a SSN that they absolutely could NOT open an account of any kind. I then proceeded thus to convince them that they were in the wrong: 1) I informed them that I had terminated my SSN legally in accordance with 20 CFR 3 A7 404.1905 and 2) I informed them that the bank could not be held legally responsible by anyone for failing to obtain a SSN from me pursuant to 31 CFR 103.34(a)(1) and 3) I informed them that under the Internal Revenue Code Section 6041, that they were not even required to provide any taxpayer identification numbers on the Form 1099 that they file with the IRS at the end of the year, and 4) I informed them that pursuant to 26 CFR 301.6109-1(c) that they were under no legal obligation to obtain a SSN from me, and 5) I informed them that 42 USC 408 makes it a FELONY to use threat, duress, or coercion to try to force a person by fear or deceit to provide his SSN in an unlawful manner. After a brief meeting with the banks controller and legal counsel, I received a phone call stating that I would be allowed to open a checking account.

... It appears you are quoting some anonymous source, right? IMHO, if you have a SSN, give it to the bank or do not attempt to open the account.

bank wire transfers
A high profile story that illustrates a point in HTBI: "It was a routine transaction with an unusual request: Eliot Spitzer, then governor of New York state, had asked a Manhattan bank to remove his name and account information from a $5,000 wire transfer to a company called QAT Consulting Group."

"The request, if granted, would have violated the Code of Federal Regulations. It also triggered a mandatory bank investigation into the transaction and generated a suspicious activity report, or SAR, that has never been released by the government."

"The bank's wire room, citing a federal regulation that requires banks to keep identifying information on clients who make wire transfers, denied the request for anonymity by Spitzer's private banker, Adam Brenner, a vice president at the Madison Avenue branch.""

"Mr. Spitzer, who advised that the purpose of the transfer to QAT was to pay a personal expense," the report states."

"But the bank officials concluded Spitzer's response "did not provide an adequate explanation."

Wire transfers are not privacy enhancing in any way. 'an adequate explanation' as deemed by the financial institution. When a matter is private it should not have to be explained.

Spitzer obviously did not read HTBI or he would have not used a wire transfer.

Tracking Cell Phones

Several people asked about cell phone tracking. On two different episodes of an A&E show called "Fugitive Chronicles" they tracked one cell phone to the exact hotel room a couple was staying. On another show they tracked a man hiding out in a cabin to his exact location.

On another A&E show "First 48 Hours" they were able to track a cell phone which had no active service.

Seems like the only cell phones they can't track are prepaid cell phones. They refer to these as burn phones.

You can watch the two "Fugitive Chronicles" shows I mentioned at hula.com.

... I am assuming the cell phones still had batteries, because if the battery is removed, I cannot imagine how a cell phone could be tracked.

Digital Copiers loaded with secrets

At a warehouse in New Jersey, 6,000 used copy machines sit ready to be sold. CBS News chief investigative correspondent Armen Keteyian reports almost every one of them holds a secret.

Nearly every digital copier built since 2002 contains a hard drive - like the one on your personal computer - storing an image of every document copied, scanned, or emailed by the machine.

In the process, it's turned an office staple into a digital time-bomb packed with highly-personal or sensitive data. If you're in the identity theft business it seems this would be a pot of gold.

"The type of information we see on these machines with the social security numbers, birth certificates, bank records, income tax forms," John Juntunen said, "that information would be very valuable."

it took Juntunen just 30 minutes to pull the hard drives out of the copiers. Then, using a forensic software program available for free on the Internet, he ran a scan - downloading tens of thousands of documents in less than 12 hours.

The results were stunning: from the sex crimes unit there were detailed domestic violence complaints and a list of wanted sex offenders. On a second machine from the Buffalo Police Narcotics Unit we found a list of targets in a major drug raid.

The third machine, from a New York construction company, spit out design plans for a building near Ground Zero in Manhattan; 95 pages of pay stubs with names, addresses and social security numbers; and $40,000 in copied checks.

But it wasn't until hitting "print" on the fourth machine - from Affinity Health Plan, a New York insurance company, that we obtained the most disturbing documents: 300 pages of individual medical records. They included everything from drug prescriptions, to blood test results, to a cancer diagnosis. A potentially serious breach of federal privacy law.

#7423 Fake secret stash
I loved the post about the worthless "secret stash" for burglars. Where is a good place in the home to hide a decoy stash that would satisfy a burglar quickly and keep him from rummaging?

... I use the top drawer in the master bedroom, but include a few real $100 bills to make it more realistic.
